The Institute of Bioproducts and Paper Technology at TU Graz offers a unique course of study in Austria with the specialisation "Bio-based Materials and Fibre Technology" within one of the Master's program of Process Engineering.
Building on the solid basic education in process engineering in the Bachelor's programme, the Master's programme deepens the knowledge and deals with the versatile processes of pulp and paper production, starting with raw wood and waste up to the further processing of paper-based products. This also includes knowledge of plant physiology, mineralogy, cellulose and lignin chemistry, modelling and simulation, biotechnology and printing technology.
Among the lectures, which are contributing the theoretical Part of the Processes are corresponding laboratories, in which the students can reconstruct the processes for the creation of pulp, paper as well as cell-based products. The practical emphasis receives endorsement with an internship at nearby companies which are presenting important process steps by their employees.
The low number of 6-10 graduates annually results in a personal atmosphere throughout the studies whether in lectures, labs, internship positions, or the concluding master thesis.
In addition, the annual excursion organised by the APV (Association of Students of Pulp and Paper Technology) visits companies throughout Europe.
Graduates of the program are in great demand by the globally important Austrian pulp and paper industry (e.g. Mayr-Melnhof, Sappi, Mondi...) and its suppliers (e.g. Andritz, Voith, Omya...).
